Couples Therapy

Relationships are a beautiful journey, but it’s not always easy. Sometimes, we face difficulties and challenges that can be difficult to overcome. When these challenges arise, seeking help from professionals who can guide us through these difficult times can be helpful. At Empowered Life Counseling, our therapists are extensively trained in the most effective approaches to help couples navigate the ups and downs of their relationships.

Introduction to Couples Therapy

Couples Therapy is a type of counseling that helps improve relationships. This type of therapy can benefit couples experiencing various issues, from minor arguments to significant relationship challenges. It can help couples work through communication problems, premarital concerns, parenting differences, sexual issues, infidelity, financial disagreements, and many other issues. The goal is to help couples build a stronger, healthier, and more fulfilling relationship.

Our Approach to Couples Therapy

At Empowered Life Counseling, we believe that every couple is unique and that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to couples therapy. That’s why we tailor therapy options to each couple’s specific needs.

Couples Therapy

Couples therapy is a type of therapy that focuses on the relationship between two people. During couples therapy, the therapist works with both partners to improve communication, resolve conflicts, and strengthen the relationship. This type of therapy can be beneficial for couples who are experiencing a variety of issues, from minor disagreements to major relationship challenges.

Emotionally Focused Therapy

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is a type of couples therapy that aims to improve the emotional bond between partners. This therapy helps couples identify and address negative patterns in their relationship, such as criticism, defensiveness, and stonewalling. Through EFT, couples can learn to communicate in a more loving and supportive way, improving their emotional connection and strengthening their relationship.

Reasons Couples Seek Therapy at Empowered Life Counseling

Discernment counseling is a type of therapy that helps couples decide whether to stay in their relationship or to separate. During discernment counseling, the therapist works with both partners to explore the reasons why they are considering separation, and helps them identify the issues that need to be addressed in order to improve the relationship. This type of therapy can be helpful for couples who are unsure about the future of their relationship.

Premarital Counseling – Getting to know one another before embarking on your journey into a committed relationship can be beneficial and prevent pitfalls in the future.

Adjustment to Life Changes – Transitions can impact a couple and create stress in a relationship. Many couples seek therapy after a move, job change, transition to parenting, loss of a loved one, retirement, and other events that could impact the relationship.

Affair Recovery – The hurt and betrayal after an affair in a relationship can feel devastating and unmanageable. Having a therapist to walk with you and your partner after a betrayal is often necessary to develop safety after an attachment injury.

Gridlock in Conflict – Couples often struggle to resolve issues. They are frustrated that they keep having the same argument over and over. Seeking couples therapy can help the relationship move past these stuck points and feel more beneficial to the whole family.

Discernment – Couples counseling can help both partners explore why they are considering separation and helps them identify the issues that they need to address to improve the relationship. This type of therapy can be helpful for couples unsure about their relationship’s future.

How Couples Therapy Can Help

Couples therapy can provide couples with a variety of benefits, including:

Conflict Management

Effective communication is vital to a healthy relationship. Couples therapy can help partners learn how to communicate more effectively, improving their relationship.

Conflict Resolution

Every relationship experiences conflict from time to time. Couples therapy can help partners learn how to resolve disputes productively rather than letting them escalate into more significant issues.

Increased Intimacy

Couples therapy can help clients learn how to reconnect with their partners. By addressing underlying issues and working to strengthen the emotional bond between partners, couples can improve their overall level of intimacy.

FAQ

The length of couples therapy varies depending on the needs and issues clients hope to address and resolve. After a few sessions with your therapist, having conversations about the timeframe needed to address your unique challenges is encouraged.

Yes, all of our therapy sessions are confidential. We take your privacy very seriously and will not share any information about your therapy sessions without your permission. However, in couples therapy, we treat the couple as “the client” and will not keep secrets between the two partners.

We do not recommend bringing children to therapy sessions, as it can be difficult for them to understand and can distract from the focus of the therapy session. However, we have therapists at Empowered Life Counseling who offer family therapy sessions that include children if that is a more appropriate option for your family.

No, we do not accept insurance for couples therapy or provide a mental health diagnosis when working with couples, so there is no way to submit to insurance for reimbursement. It is an investment in your most important relationship.
